WHO: All interested Warrick County Parents and Families
WHEN: Thursday, August 1st from 8am-3pm
WHERE: Warrick Education Center, 3199 SR 261, Newburgh, Indiana
At the request of many parents and families, Kelly Dora (Behavioral and Autism Specialist) will be conducting another FREE parent and care provider training on how they use the TEACCH and STARS Autism Programs in the Warrick County School Corporation!
What is the TEACCH Program? Well, it is one of the most universally researched and accepted programs for teaching children on the Autism Spectrum. TEACCH stands for “Treatment and Education of Autistic and other Communication-handicapped CHildren.” This presentation will shed light on what the TEACCH research has to say regarding the ‘culture’ of Autism, and provide insights into how we can better understand our friends on the Autism Spectrum. Parents of young children with Autism, or with cognitive disabilities, should leave this program with a better understanding of how they can develop structured learning systems for their child at home.
What is the STAR Program? This program is another very research-based program that borrows techniques from some of the most respected and accepted Autism treatment and training protocols (such as ABA, Pivotal Response Training, and Behavior Modification, etc) and presents them in a “Kit” format. The STAR kit is divided into 3 distinct levels, beginning with very young or low-functioning skills, and progresses to grade level academic training up to about a 3rd grade level. Lessons are presented sequentially, and everything you need to know how to conduct each lesson is contained within the kit. As students master one lesson, you simply move on to the next lesson. So, parents who don’t have a degree in special education can simply follow the directions contained in each lesson (which are provided in great detail and with examples), help their child master that skill, and move on to the next.
It is important to state that this training is not being provided by the TEACCH or STARS trainers. Complete STARS or TEACCH training is provided in workshops that take from 2.5 days to 2 weeks of 8 hour days. Rather, this is a summary of how WE are using these programs successfully here in Warrick County School Corporation, with the hope that you will then have a better understanding of how you can help your child learn in a similar format in your homes.
